Restoration of Minot’s Amtrak depot gets federal funding PDF Print E-mail

MINOT, N.D. — An award of federal stimulus money means that remodeling of the interior of Minot's Amtrak depot can begin this year.

The project will be getting up to $400,000 in transportation enhancement funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Construction now will get started after having been postponed for lack of money when the exterior of the building was restored in 2008, said Dennis Lutz, chairman of the depot restoration committee.

Lutz said the committee will be hiring an architect to review existing drawings and draft a plan that modernizes the building yet retains its historical features. The remodeling will provide handicapped-accessible restrooms and better utilize space to create more room for rail passengers. The goal won't be to restore the interior to its original 1905 appearance because times have changed.

The depot once had separate sections for men and women, a dim hallway and wooden benches. Those features won't be back, but the restoration committee has considered wainscoting on the walls and a pressed tin ceiling to give the building the look of 1905.

Because the work is indoors, it is possible that construction would take place during the winter. Lutz said contractors should be able to arrange the work to allow use of the depot during construction.

Amtrak cuts Northeast fares 25 percent for the summer PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amtrak said yesterday that it cut fares on regional trains in the Northeast 25 percent for the summer travel season as it seeks to rekindle demand eroded by the economic slump.

Amtrak also extended a February price reduction on its high-speed Acela trains, which run on the Boston-Washington route, the rail operator said in a statement. The fares became available for purchase yesterday for travel from June 2 through Sept. 3. Acela travel requires reservations, which must be made 14 days in advance of travel.

The new 25 percent discount is available for travel on Amtrak routes between Boston and Washington - including between Philadelphia and New York, and Philadelphia and Washington. The discount also applies to travel south of Washington to Newport News, Va.

The railroad said the discount may be combined with its half-price fares for children between the ages of 2 and 15.

The discounted fare also requires a reservation that must be made 14 days before travel.

In April, the Washington-based railroad's ridership dropped 8.9 percent on the Northeast Corridor and 2.3 percent nationwide as the recession cut business and leisure travel.

Amtrak marketing vice president Emmett Fremaux said the discounts were aimed at the "value-conscious traveler."

The railroad carried 28.7 million passengers in its latest fiscal year.
